Fall Retreat to New Orleans
The Cohort completes a year of cultural orientation and training in preparation for their Immersive International Travel in July of 2026. The early slaves working at the Whitney plantation were primarily from West Africa. The cohort learned all about the skills the slaves brought with them from West Africa and how this early history ties into the current lives of people living in New Orleans. The Cohort spent the weekend in New Orleans, visiting places that are still very rich with history from the Transatlantic Slave trade. The cohort had the weekend to discuss their experiences. The Cohort documented their thoughts in a video and shared the video with the students at the Ampenyi M/A Basic School in Elmina, West Africa. One of the most interesting findings was learning that the last people living on the plantation did not leave until 1975.
